Finally! A yummy meat free and healthful alternative to beef jerky. I've tried a bunch of vegetarian options and never really loved any of them. However, this was pretty cool - it was smothered in hickory sauce and the "jerky" itself was moist, super tender and nicely textured. This is so much better for you than real jerky - no cholesterol, no nitrates, no MSG and it's lower in sodium (although that's not saying much because it's still out of control). It doesn't have that dried meat texture of regular jerky, which for me was a plus, but may not be for everyone. Although each piece is under 100 calories, beware...these are pretty small, so they are not the all time best bang for your caloric buck. But given the great taste and better nutrition, I'd say they are worth it. By the way, I'm not sure that "primal" is the best name for a food being marketed to vegans, but hey, maybe they'll appreciate the irony?!

Tofurky is a good lower sodium option for jerky, however, when it comes to taste, it is no comparison whatsoever to Primal vegan jerky. Tofurky is not nearly as moist and flavorful as Primal, not to mention that it has a weird plastic-y "veggie meat" aftertaste that plagues some brands. That being said, this peppered variety is good if you are looking for a veggie option that has the peppered meat flavor of real jerky with just about 1/2 the sodium (and about 100mg less than Primal jerky). I found myself going back for another one and another one, which surprised me, although I would much rather stick with Primal jerky than buy this again next time.

If you haven't caught on to the Primal vegan jerky craze, you are so missin' out it's not even funny. These are a snacking must-have with loads of flavors for every type of taste. Primal gets the gold star for finding a way to make a veggie "meat" option moister than any other veggie substitute out there. If you dislike the dry, crumbly nature of veggie options, then you'll be amazed at how different these are. In terms of this specific flavor, it has just a touch of spice that you really only notice as part of the aftertaste. I would want more spice, but I also like to have stuff singe my mouth off...making me a pretty terrible judge on whether or not something is spiced right for the average taste. Nutritionally, these are very high in protein (even compared to most brands of beef jerky, which is pretty amazing), but the sodium is completely out of control. These are also a little high in sugar, so watch out for that.
