I really, REALLY wanted to like this hot dog. But I just wasn't feelin' it dawg, seriously.
The Taste: I threw one of these on the grill and the outside of it was so chewy that I had to get a sharp knife to cut through it. When I finally did, it tasted like plastic underneath. I have to say, I'm desperately missing Morningstar Farms veggie hot dogs (why, why, WHY aren't they making those anymore)?
The Nutrition: If you can deal with the way these taste, they are relatively healthful. These are high in protein, reasonable on iron and relatively lower in sodium for a hot dog (which is still ridiculously high).
I don't know, I'm really floundering in my search to find a good veggie hot dog, as I really don't like Tofurky dogs either. I haven't yet found Veggie Patch's veggie dogs, so I'm hoping for a hog dog miracle with those. SORRY!

I had a different food planned for the day, however I have been getting inundated with emails asking why Morningstar Farms stopped making their veggie dogs, and when they are going to bring them back. The answer to the first question is that they may have found Listeria in the plant that made them, so the FDA made them shut it down (this is the word on the street, and cannot be confirmed). The answer to the second question is I have absolutely NO IDEA.
Just yesterday the keyphrase "veggie hot dog to replace Morningstar Farms" sent several unique visitors to Calorista.com. Clearly Morningstar Farms has a problem on their hands! Sadly, I don't have a veggie dog suggestion to replace it, or not a good one anyway. I have tried to grill up Smart Dogs, but I really don't like them. What I don't understand is why MF doesn't address it. If they are in the process of trying to bring them back, they should let us know.
My plea for the day is for all of you MF veggie dog fans to pay a visit to their Facebook page and let them know how you feel! It's time they at least give us an answer. |

Since Morningstar Farms no longer makes veggie hot dogs, they now recommend picking up these from Worthington (their sister company). Sooo...is this good advice or nepotism at its best?
The Taste: These are very good, and taste a whole lot like real hot dogs. They are juicy, tender and have no weird plasticky after-taste...three things that are rare for a veggie dog. They are even "colored" that reddish hue like real hot dogs, but we'll get back to that one later.
The Nutrition: OK, this is where this whole thing unravels like a cheap sweater. These veggie hot dogs have red #5, MSG AND corn syrup solids in them...hardly things that most food conscious people want to eat. These dogs also have double the calories of the late Morningstar Farms dogs AND they are very high in fat (with the name "Leanies", no less. Worthington either has a sick sense of humor or a wildly creative definition of the word "lean"). The bottom line with these is that if you are a vegetarian and are on the hunt for a great tasting veggie dog regardless of the ingredients, this is a good option (IF you can find it, which is a little tricky in and of itself). However, if you are actually looking for something that is veggie AND good for you, I'd switch to Yves corn dogs. If you don't mind changing over to the corn variety (Yves regular hot dogs do NOT taste good), Yves corn dogs are all natural, have more nutrition and fewer calories and taste really good.
